On June 6th, the establishment of the Breeders Alliance Company Ltd. was announced at the Global Grape Summit in London. The primary aim of the Alliance, jointly founded by Grapa Varieties, IFG, SNFL and Sun World Innovations, is to prevent illegal plantings of licensed fruit varieties. As Grapa CEO, Rafi Karniel explains, “Four of the world’s top fruit breeders will cooperate in stopping ongoing attempts to appropriate proprietary plant material and infringement of Intellectual Property Rights”.
As well as protecting the breeders’ rights, the Alliance will, in turn, protect the interests of licensed growers who pay royalties for their licensed fruit varieties.
