Stunning ARRA in Brazil

Last weekend in Petrolina, the ever-growing Grapa Brazil team held the seventh annual field day to showcase the stunning ARRA in Brazil – the latest developments of the ARRA™ Varieties’. Throughout the three days, the event drew more than 300 producers, technical managers, and this year with a new focal audience: key local and global table grape trading companies.

The Grapa Brazil team was reinforced by Uzi Yaron, Grapa’s R&D Director, Karl Conrads Grapasa’s CEO, and Carlo Lingua, AVI/RK Growers CEO. They were each able to share with producers in Brazil their experiences with ARRA™ Varieties in their territories. Karl shared his experience from Chile and Peru, while Carlo provided valuable insights from a marketing perspective. Their expertise and insights set a broader global outlook.

The tour of the varieties was led by Augusto Prado, President of Grapa Brazil and table grape consultant in the region, as well as by Amanda Rodrigues, Technical Manager of Grapa Brazil, in charge of the trial blocks of the ARRA varieties in Brazil. With their unique viewpoints on the ARRA programme, they both shared information and experiences in the rows as well as during the tasting.

Definitely crushing all the reds out there

The mesmerizing ARRA Cherry Crush™️ stood out as the star of the event, captivating everyone with its exquisite taste and appearance. Russaika Nascimento, Technical Manager of Grapa shares: “ARRA producers in Brazil are expanding the areas planted with this variety, also rising is the market demand, as the consumers are falling in love with it”. She explains further “The perfect match of the variety to the Sao Francisco Valley is due to its high fertility and productivity, natural colouration, 2 annual crops and resistance to rain”.

A Win-Win for Everyone

Among the participants, Tony Calvillo, Vice President of International Business Development, Dayka & Hackett LLC, a Frutura Company shared his excitement: “Our global journey takes us to various table grape regions, tirelessly searching for top-tier grapes to ensure a delightful consumer experience. Today, we visited the ARRA Cherry Crush—a grape variety that exceeds the expectations of growers, consumers, and retailers alike. After closely monitoring its progress over time, we are thrilled to witness its remarkable potential. Boasting an alluring cherry colour, impressive size, abundant production, and a perfect balance of taste and crunch, ARRA Cherry Crush creates a mutually beneficial scenario for discerning producers, consumers, and retailers.”

Rain resistant, 2 annual cycles, flavour varieties in the pipeline

However, the excitement didn’t stop there. The ARRA Field Days were also a stage for the immense potential of the newest flavour varieties from the ARRA breeding programme. Attendees were amazed by what the future holds for the grape industry. The novelty in flavour varieties that are tolerant to rain and produce 2 cycles a year sparking considerable interest among producers.

The weather helped to present and emphasize the ARRA varieties’ resilience to rain as the event was held after a rainfall of approximately 100 mm, which the varieties withstood and were ready for display.

ARRA Fire Crunch™ WOWS Peru

The ARRA Fire Crunch was ready to harvest in week 46 at Rapel in Piura, Peru. The bunches are spectacular, and most importantly for Peru, their shimmering red colour remains a beautiful red, unlike other red varieties in Peru that when ripe for harvest, get too dark.

To herald this great achievement, Karl Conrads, Founder and CEO of Grapasa, the territorial representative for the ARRA™ varieties in South America led several private tours through the rows for leading Peruvian producers as well as global trading companies.

Nothing like it has ever been seen

The general impression is short and simple, says Karl: “There is no grape variety in the world with this quality. Nothing like it has ever been seen.” When asked to be a bit more specific, Karl goes into detail: “The variety excels in all parameters: fertility, good bunch structure, easy to grow, excellent berry size and weight. Above all, are the two characteristics that gave the variety its name ARRA Fire Crunch: The unbelievable COLOUR, never seen before in Peru. The CRUNCHINESS that leads to an amazing eating quality, like an apple.”

The smiles spread on everyone’s faces

Karl finishes off by sharing that “The best part of the tour came after seeing the grapes on the vines, when the time came to taste the berries, then, the smiles spread on everyone’s faces, as they experienced the crunchiness and flavour.”

Grapasa and Grapa thank the esteemed Rapel management for opening their gates at the height of the season, not to mention the technical team that achieved true-to-type results, in no time.

Don’t miss the next edition with more Fire Crunch Wow, but at Pura Fruit…

ARRA in Southern Africa

ARRA Honey Pop™ Field Day Namibia

On Tuesday 14 November, TopFruit, the exclusive territorial agent for the commercialization of the ARRA™ varieties and Early Sweet™ in Southern Africa, held a field day, focusing on ARRA Honey Pop at Silverlands, in Aussenkehr, Namibia.

Andre Angebag, viticulturist at TopFruit, who provides support to the ARRA™ table grape varieties producers in the Northern Cape and Namibia, orchestrated this successful event and recounts: “Though everyone is busy packing, they all made the time to be there. We led two groups, so that everyone could get more one-on-one time with optimal personalized attention.”

Leading companies and key stakeholders from the industry, including growers and exporters, attended, and provided positive feedback on what they experienced.

In case you weren’t there, these are some of the audio that accompanied the visuals, that you can see in the photos of the ARRA Honey Pop bunches…

Willem Visser of Silverlands: “It sure is a variety that is very labour friendly compared to its competitors”.

Almost everyone repeated the mantra: ”There is much potential for this variety in our area”.

Leon de Kock of Grape Alliance, shares his experience and high expectations: “Thus far we have not received any negative feedback from the market and we will see again this year since we are exporting more”.

Mark your calendars: If you’re in the area, join the upcoming field day in the Northern Cape on 23 November at Sweet Sensation in Augrabies.

Meanwhile in Limpopo…

Last week AJ Jansen van Vuuren, Table Grape Manager at TopFruit, made a short trip to the Northern region of RSA to look at some key varieties’ pre-harvest. He reports: “There has already been some Early Sweet and ARRA Honey Pop harvested and the other ARRAs are soon to follow. At this stage, the quality is looking very good, and you can see the attention to detail. Growers are not over eager to get harvesting and risk quality. The all-round feeling is very positive and totally contagious. Thus far the rain has been manageable, and the forecast is looking very favourable for the grapes”.

AJ continues: “ARRA Honey Pop is also highly anticipated in Limpopo for its good results. Last week at HN Pieterse, in Groblersdal, the berries were at 20-21 mm, sweet, uniform bunches. The excellent management on this farm is apparent. The biggest thing the grower repeated is that they really didn’t do much work. They are very impressed, the marketing team is very excited, everyone is looking forward, so let’s keep our fingers crossed.”

ARRA Passion Fire in Limpopo is looking very good and will be harvested this week.

ARRA Passion Fire stands out at the Namibian Block Competition

On November 4th the annual block competition was held in Namibia, hosted by the NGGA (Namibian Grape Growers Association). The winning blocks are judged by many parameters, but overall appearance and fruit quality are the most important. So with that said the ARRA Passion Fire was the variety that enjoyed the most attention in all categories and in the end managed to take both 3rd and 2nd place for best production blocks in Namibia. Bravo to the growers for sharing the passion all around! This was a very festive way to open the local grapes season!

Pop & Drop - 2 Awesome Grape Varieties!

In our previous edition we shared the beautiful grapes from Emerald. We thought you’d like to hear what John Staier, of Wurlin, had to say: “Thank you Grapa for 2 awesome grape varieties & all the help you’ve been”.

He goes into further detail about ARRA Honey Pop™: “They are a full coloured variety, they don’t sunburn, they are firm and they would be a good export variety. They certainly get a light muscat or honey flavour over 17 brix.”

The ARRA Sugar Drop, too, got the Wurlin Team smiling. Rory and Drew Staier

Representatives from Uvasys couldn’t miss out on such a photo op, capturing John’s ARRA Sugar Drop for their promotional material.

The ARRA Varieties Manager in Australia, Stephan Nel, comments: John Staier is picking 15-20 kg. per vine on some of his ARRA Sugar Drop patches, this is very good for Emerald.

ARRA Honey Pop on the shelves at Woolworths

After you saw the beautiful bunches picked and packed, we wanted you to see them at the next 2 final and crucial steps in the chain: on the shelf and in the consumers hands.

Turns out that Stephan never really rests… While on the Sunshine Coast for the long weekend, he bought some ARRA Honey Pop for his family.

He shares: “It was really exciting to see the very new ARRA Honey Pop on the shelves in Woolworths, the fruit looked amazing and was sweet and crisp, my boys loved it. The benefit of this variety is that It can be picked very early with good brix resulting in excellent eating quality”.

More to follow

There is still so much more to follow in Australia, we’ll be back in future editions with news also from Sunraysia… for example ARRA Sugar Drop at Cavallo Fruits and ARRA Yum!bo at Romeo’s Best.
